Flesh Blood and Bone is a medical skyscraper project that integrates the concept of body circulating system, the organizational flow of the hospital, and the context of the site. The skyscraper has been mainly used for offices, hotels, and residents. This project proposes the expansion of the range of skyscraper from working and living environments to the vertical healthcare environment.

Hospital programs are spatialized into three zones(clinical, nursing, and support) and vertically arranged by the order of programmatic connection. Distinguished elevators by user groups increase flow efficiency by minimizing unnecessary crossing between the medical team and patients. Exoskeleton structure facilitates open floors and spacious lobby. High-rise nursing units offer wide views for better living environments for inpatients.

As the body anatomy is composed of flesh(functioning organs), blood(circulation flow), and bone(structure), building anatomy of this project is organized to serve a vertical healthcare environment. The elevator core, the backbone of the building, connects floors with different functions of the hospital.

The site is located on the side of the Chicago River and provides access to the waterfront. The main lobby café and meeting place is directly connected to the waterfront playground with side escalators and also visually connected through the front window frame.

The design concept of playground equipment and dining area is derived from the dynamic flow of blood and the organic composition of flesh. Waterfront public activities and the play of children will bring vitality to the building and give a positive impact on patients, medical staff, and the visiting public.
